Well it’s been a while, but our Facebook for Farmers post series is still alive and kicking – in fact, we’ve barely scratched the surface of this exciting topic. We’ve told you our reasons behind this blog series, as well as how to get an email address (which happens to be the way you sign up for practically anything online!), and now we’re ready to help you get signed up for facebook.

Starters, head on over to www.facebook.com. You’ll see a page that looks like this:

Remember, facebook is free, and they say that it always will be. This is great to hear, because I have a feeling the site’s popularity would drop dramatically if users were charged to use it.

Enter your first and last name, email, and a password of your choice. For your safety, choose a password that is difficult for someone to guess – don’t use your daughter’s name or your house number, for example. The best passwords usually have a combination of upper- and lower-case letters and at least one number. Select your sex and birthdate, and click the green “sign up” button.

You’ll be sent to the security check which is in the form of a CAPTCHA. A CAPTCHA is that strange looking word or two in a box that are sort of hard to read. Computers can’t read CAPTCHAs, but we can (or should be able to – sometimes when you come to a CAPTCHA you can click a link to get a new one). When facebook asks you to type in a CAPTCHA, facebookis trying to keep out computer robots that want to bug you, while still letting honest users sign up.

You simply enter the word or scrambled phrase exactly as you see them in the box — using capital and lowercase letters as needed — and click “Sign Up”. They’ll send you an email to confirm it’s really you that is trying to sign up.

When you log in to facebook for the first time, the site will take you through some simple steps that will you get started and help you find your friends. These steps help you enter information that can help you find friends right away or later on, whichever you prefer. First, they’ll ask you if you want to use their service to Find Friends. The Friend Finder checks your e-mail address book (depending on your email account provider) and checks e-mails to existing facebook user accounts. This helps you send friend requests to people you know right away.

Once you’ve been on the site for a while, your mutual contacts should be able to find you, and vice-versa. This is the “viral” thing you might have heard about – when you become friends with someone, other users are notified of these connections, helping you befriend more people you know.
