Farm Recipe Friday: (Healthy!) Baked Cheese Balls

Posted on: April 13th, 2012 by titanoutlet

How many of you love ordering an appetizer or two when you go to a restaurant?  Yes, the choices are many – hundreds in fact.  That small plate of food you “munch” on before your main course is meant to stimulate your appetite, but I have often found that it does more than that.  I enjoy this part of the dining experience so much that I am almost stuffed before I partake in the most important plate of food that follows.  I oftentimes forgo the appetizer to avoid getting too full and to save on calories.

Al (from our office) ran across this appetizer one day while perusing the internet, and we agreed to bring the ingredients to work and give it a try (yes, our job is difficult some days!).  This Baked Cheese Balls recipe idea came from www.justaddasliceoflove.blogspot.com and uses light string cheese, skim milk and a mixture of Italian style bread crumbs and seasonings.  We experimented with the conventional oven as well as a toaster oven – both worked, but the toaster oven had to be more closely monitored.  The resulting appetizer was easy to make and delicious!  We were very excited to share this with our co-workers, but after trying them first, decided that the rest of our staff would just have to take our word for it!

Baked Cheese Balls

Light string cheese

Skim milk

Cooking spray

Marinara Sauce of Your Choice

Breading:

¼ Cup dry breadcrumbs (Italian style)

¼ Cup grated parmesan cheese

1 tsp seasoned salt (Lawry’s)

1 tsp garlic powder

Cut cheese sticks into bite-size portions, dip into skim milk and coat with breading mixture.  Place on a greased pan and bake in oven at 425° for approximately 8-10 minutes, making sure cheese softens, but does not melt.  Serve with marinara sauce and enjoy!
