A couple nights ago I had the opportunity to work with my old man around his house. We cleaned the garage for a while, putting some of his work stuff away and looking through his treasures (the guy is a beer salesman, I’m a young man/beer connoisseur – it works out well). I had already mowed his lawn – one of his most obsessed over jobs around the house – with his “tractor”, a John Deere 100 series lawn tractor (I’m pretty sure it’s a riding lawn mower, but if he wants to call it a tractor, I’ll let him).

After some putzing around in the garage we decided to get to the real work. I recently purchased a house, unfortunately past the tax break deadline, and because of this my dad and I have been getting some stuff done to make things a little more comfortable around there. Our project this particular evening was making a holder for my patio umbrella out of a metal bucket (the kind bars will sell you a “bucket of beers” in), some PVC pipe, and Quikrete.

Here’s a little background: my dad and I are by no means “handymen”. We make up for our lack of skills with the ability to make friends with people who are very skilled in wood working, electrical work, drywall, and just about anything else that we’d rather not screw up. Don’t get us wrong – we have a lot of tools – we just don’t know how to use them very well. I used a table saw to cut the PVC pipe (we cut it into three pieces: one for me and two for one of his beer accounts’ outdoor patio), which went a lot smoother than I thought it would. While I was sawing the pipe, Dad was mixing the Quikrete and spilling the mix all over the driveway. The 20 mph gusts of wind were definitely not helping the situation.

I brought my pieces of pipe over to help Dad, who by this time had the hose out and was high-volume spraying the Quikrete in the bucket, concrete dust and pebbles going everywhere. I used a garden trowel to stir the thick goop into the desired consistency, and poured the mix into the buckets that our PVC pipe was sticking straight up in. This wasn’t horrible, but I managed to get a fair amount of wet Quikrete on my arms and legs (that stuff dries nicely in arm and leg hair) and in my flip-flops (maybe not the best footwear for the job?). After setting up the pipes in the buckets a few times to make sure they were straight, we let them sit out for the night and now they’re hard and the pipes aren’t at an angle or anything – just about ready for the umbrellas!

I can’t complain about the process, because spending quality time with my family is important to me. It’s nice to be able to do some of those construction type jobs on our own, but we’ll always need a little help from our gifted friends.

Construction workers we’re not, but we try.

-Al Winmill

Maybe you’re a construction contractor and need some heavy duty equipment to help out your business…take a look at the Titan Outlet Store Inventory to see what we have in stock. Don’t forget, sometimes used farm equipment is just as handy as construction-type tractors!

The simple answer: sell it for as good a price as possible!

Many places in the country are working on a perfect storm of farm marketing: great weather conditions leading to great yields and the luxury of having other players in the grain exporting business struggle with drought and other weather conditions. Both Russia and Canada, both in the top 10 wheat exporting nations, are having poor years and aren’t expected to have a substantial exports this season (Russia is down to about a third of their crop this year).

Minnesota, on the other hand, is on track to set some serious records for corn and soybean harvests this fall. Sugar beets and dry beans are looking great as well. We’ve seen a lot of work in sugar beet fields already this year, which in contrast to the last couple (of wet, muddy, nasty) years is pretty outstanding. The weather has certainly played nice in much of Minnesota and North and South Dakota this winter, spring, and summer, and fall is looking great. The rain came at the right times, the heat was perfect, and crops have been responding accordingly. The corn is gorgeous – someone even found a stalk with 27 ears on it in Iowa! A medium sized adult could easily get lost in a soybean in the Red River Valley. Beets looked like carrots last year and this year the leaves look like they’re attached to some underground basketballs.

We’re hoping you guys have a plan for all this excess – and we hope you sell at the right time to get the most cash for your crops. We know things might not work out perfectly with the market and your harvesting schedule, so having storage options on location will be a huge asset.

We met Jason at Custom Marketing Company (CMC) out of Fargo, ND a while ago and learned a little bit more about their company.

Preserving memories using the video camera is something that can be really fun. More and more people are taking their small pocket sized video recorder to capture loved ones in their natural settings, filming events such as graduation or sporting events, and some even film everyday life on the farm.

Why take the time to learn how to use a camera and deal with distributing the videos, you might ask. Well like I said before – you’re preserving memories. You may have relatives that live in the city and don’t really know much about tractors, combines, trucks, etc. Or heck, your favorite used equipment store might even give you prize for sharing your video with them (shameless plug!). But really – there’s no reason NOT to do some video work. It’s not that hard to learn and it’s something you can always do to preserve memories and share them with loved ones.

Having a small video recorder with you while in the field can give you the opportunity to share with them just what it’s like to grow up on a farm. These devices are becoming very inexpensive and are easy to operate. I mean come on, you can set your GPS or adjust the sieves on your combine, but you say I can’t run one of those because it’s too complicated. Think of the memories for those of you who have young ones who are showing lots of interest in farming and may someday take over the family farm.

You have a ton of options to choose from, from dedicated full size camcorders all the way down to a high end cell phone, for taking quality video. Some of you might want a larger camera with more options, but for the most part you’ll want to choose something you can fit in a pocket or keep in your pickup’s glove box. You can use a digital camera (that you use to take family photos) if it has a video setting, and get good results. Many people use this option because they already have a camera for snap shots and don’t want a dedicated video camera, which is fine. At the Titan Outlet Store, we use a Flip Video camcorder, about the size of a large cell phone and costing less than $200, and get high quality HD videos of our farm and construction equipment.

We at the Titan Outlet Store also have fun using the video recorder. Every time we get a used tractor, used combine or any used equipment in for that matter we take a minute and a half video to show the customer that everything is working and they can see it in action, because although we’re based on the Minnesota and North Dakota border, we sell farm and construction equipment to customers across the United States and Canada. We also have customers in Mexico, Uruguay, and parts of Europe – when they decide they want to spend money on farm equipment coming from that far away, you better believe they want to see that tractor or baler in a video before signing a check!

Do we ever understand the magnitude of how we react to things? Do we ever realize that we and we alone choose how we are going to react to something? We choose whether we want our emotions to react negatively or positively. Now, granted, some events and words force an “uncontrollable” emotional response, but by and large, our emotional response, if practiced enough, can be a controlled response.

Imagine your wheat, soybeans, or corn producing a better than expected yield. Imagine getting the “RIGHT” rain and the “RIGHT” time. Imagine your tractor or combine breaking down? Imagine the commodity pricing going down with no seemingly no rhyme or reason. It is easy to be negative when the actions, events, or words are bad. It is easy to be positive when actions, events or words are good.

Do a little study on yourself – keep track of how you react to events, actions or words through a course of day or over a week. Really pay attention to how you reacted over the course of the day or week. You will be surprised on how often each one of us reacts negatively. You will notice how easy it is to react negatively. How we create drama for ourselves or others that is completely unnecessary.

As you are looking at your emotional reactions study, take a couple of those moments of events or words that produced a negative emotional response, play out hypothetically with some good assumptions, of how the next set of words or actions would occur if your emotional response was positive. Imagine your “little farmer” is watching you, and then react.

Imagine when the wheat, corn, soybeans, sugar beets priced dropped for seemingly no rhyme or reason, rather than reacting negatively, you could say – “ sure prices went down today, but lucky me, I did not sell today” or “sure prices went down, but I have still have a crop to sell” Can you see the difference? Maybe next time, a breakdown occurs, or fertilizer did not work perfectly, a possible response could be, “at least I have my own tractor / combine to fix” or “at least I have wheat, corn, sugar beet, soybean crop that needed fertilizer”.

As tough as it maybe, next time something negative happens, STOP! count to 10 , then try to react positively. Be different than most, try and set an example for others. You may find out over time, how reacting positively becomes a habit. Let us all try and be different!

Social media is the most popular online activity – overtaking X-rated sites and Email recently – and the Titan Outlet Store is trying to stay current and offer our customers many ways to connect and communicate with us.

Our approach to social networking and social media is one that not enough companies have taken: we want to increase two-way communications instead of pushing our message and trying to sell farm and construction equipment all day (we have a sales staff for that!). What we want to do is LISTEN to what you have to say. We want to get to know you. We want to connect with you and become more than a place to get a great buy on a used tractor or combine (or baler, tillage, planting equipment, construction equipment….the list goes on!). We even have a blog series to help farmers and construction professionals get started and have success with social media – see the posts here: Titan Outlet Store: Facebook for Farmers.

We ask that you look for us on any of the sites you use (and if you’re not on these sites, give them a try!). We’ll strive to offer you something informational, entertaining, or time saving every day. Here are some links to help you find us:

Facebook: www.facebook.com/TitanOutletStore This is where we have daily discussions, contest information, farming tips and tidbits, post a couple pictures and videos of our equipment, and more!

Twitter: www.twitter.com/TitanOutlet We use Twitter to communicate and learn more about the AgVocates working hard to help make the internet a better place for farmers.

YouTube: www.youtube.com/TitanOutletStore YouTube is more than just a video site for us – we hold contests through YouTube, connect with a lot of great ag and construction videographers, and provide demos on almost all of our used equipment to give buyers confidence that our tractors, combines, implements, etc. are in great working condition.

Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/people/titanoutletstore/ Admittedly, we’re not as active on Flickr as we should be. We put a lot of our pictures on equipment classified sites, our inventory site, and our website – but the pictures we put (and will continue putting!) on Flickr are some of the great farm photos, photos taken for blog posts, and photos from events we attend.

Skype: While this isn’t really a social networking site, it’s a great way for us to communicate with our customers. We have several great customers in Uruguay, lots of happy customers in Canada, and we’re working with some Agricultural Delegates from Africa to help get them better equipment. If they wanted to call us every time they had a question, the phone bills would pile up quick. With Skype, we can have a video conference (for free!) and we can see and hear everything each party has to say. You can find us at don.aberle or alec.winmill – we’d love to Skype with you!

The majority of our office staff is on LinkedIn, as well. LinkedIn is a great social network for business – you can recommend people, learn about people’s work or education history, and join groups related to your industry (we’re a part of many farm and construction professional groups as well as sub categories for what we do daily – I’m a member of design and social media groups, Don is a member of managerial groups, etc.). Find me at www.linkedin.com/in/alecwinmill and from there you can find Don, Chad, Kelly, or anyone else on our staff.

We’re also on AgLoop, brought to us by the guys who run the HayTalk forums. We haven’t been to active on this one, but it’s pretty easy to use and seems like a good resource. We wrote a blog post about AgLoop recently: check it out here.

That’s where you can find us online – for now, anyway. We’ll try to keep up with what’s going on in the world of social networking to better serve and communicate with you. If you can think of any we missed, we’d love to join you – let us know in the comments and we’ll check it out.

I had the pleasure of spending a few days at an event called WE FEST this past weekend. I tell you what, take some country music, some beverages of your choice, and throw in 40,000 plus of us Red Necks at a camp ground near Detroit Lakes for three days and I guarantee you, a good time can be had.

I hope for all of the farmers that were not harvesting wheat yet, or having one last weekend of fun before turning your attention to the upcoming soybean and corn harvest, had fun. The songs with the words of combines, tractors, playing in the hay bales, and living on the farm , I am sure it took a lot of the “older” rednecks that are no longer working on the farms, back to the simpler times.

The music provided by, Kenney Chesney, Blake Shelton, Derks Bentley, Jason Aldean and a few other country stars, sure hit the right notes. Heck even Kid Rock was a hit with all the Farm Folks (well most of the farm folks)

Remember all you hard working farmers out there, a farmer needs to park the combine and tractor once in a while and enjoy life a little bit. Whether it a weekend like WE FEST, or a weekend with the wife and kids, time away from long hours of planting, haying or harvesting are needed.
