Easier said than done, right?  You’re focused on the weather, your crop yield and equipment performance, along with having the necessary farm help in order to get the job done.  But your personal health is another important component to a successful harvest.  Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Don’t skip meals.  Have them brought to you in the field if necessary, and take that time to relax and catch up with family members.
  • Eat healthy snacks.  Keep nuts, fruit and other quick and handy healthy snacks.  Stay away from sugary items which lead to a “sugar crash”.
  • Stay hydrated.  Make water your top beverage choice and keep coffee and soda to a minimum.  On hot days, sip an electrolyte drink to stay replenished.
  • Get enough sleep.*  Your body needs time to rest and your mind needs time to rejuvinate.  We all know that no sleep leads to less efficiency and more potential for accidents.
  • Take frequent breaks.  Not just for eating, but also for stretching to avoid aches, pains and possible injury.  Your back muscles will thank you!
  • Wear proper protection.  A two-strap disposable mask to prevent farmer’s lung, sunscreen, clothing that won’t get caught in machinery, and sturdy footwear.
  • Schedule a checkup. Take time to do this so you can treat or prevent health issues that could sabotage your harvest season.
  • Run safety checks.  Equipment operating at peak efficiency reduces your need to work more hours to do service and repair, and you won’t risk injury rushing to get your unit back into the field.
  • Check exposed skin.  Every night check for ticks, bug bites, cuts, scrapes, chafing, rashes, and other things that could cause problems later.  Treat injuries with antibiotic and moisturize sunburnt/dry skin.
  • Replace filters in your equipment cabins.  An activated carbon filter should be recharged every 6-12 months or after 400 hours of service.  Dust or the smell of chemical in your cabin is sign that filters need changing.
  • Exercise.  Believe it or not, there are things you can do while in the cab:
    • point your toes and use your big toe to write your name in the air,
    • march on the spot while sitting down,
    • sit up straight and gently twist side to side,
    • arch your back, then straighten up tall, and,
    • turn your head side to side to stretch your neck muscles

*If you’re experiencing insomnia, some natural sleep aids are establishing a routine (important for your body), sleeping in a dark and quiet room, getting up and walking around (counting sheep is a sleep myth), NOT facing a clock, and winding yourself down with something relaxing 30 minutes before bedtime.  Lack of sleep can exacerbate issues like diabetes and high blood pressure.


You may at first have to consciously perform some of these tasks to train yourself, but eventually they’ll become second nature.  Stay healthy this harvest season.
