Wow can you believe it’s August? Here in the upper Midwest USA, who would have thought we would have people in the field harvesting their wheat already with the Spring that that we experienced in the Red River Valley of the North. There were some heavy storms last week that stopped farmers for a day or two, but overall, we are seeing a lot of farmers in the field with the combines, the grain headers, the grain carts, and tractors getting the harvest off to a good start. Heck, there were a few farms in the just south of here that were doing some tillage already, turning that small grain stubble to good old black dirt.
Every year, it’s interesting, the comments and conversations we all have regarding the crops, the rain, the wind, the heat, etc… We all worry whether the crops are going to get in. Are we going to get enough rain to make them grow? Are we going to get enough heat units at the right time? Are we going to miss the bad storm? Are we going to get a late killing frost? , etc…
I would be willing to bet for the more experienced (ok, lets’ be blunt – the older, “experienced”) farmer, the conversations about the growing season are pretty much the same this year as they have been for the past few decades. But you know something, I would also be willing to bet, those same farmers ENJOY IMMENSELY having the same conversation every year.
One thing I have learned about the Agriculture Industry and the stewards of the land, there is such pure passion of these individuals. To be able to take some land, do the proper maintenance, plant a seed or kernel , say a prayer, watch it grow, and then harvest that crop that helps feed the world and provide a living for a family must provide great joy to these good stewards of the land.
Imagine having the drive inside you, to get up each day, making the 1000 decisions daily that are required for farming: What seed? What chemical? What Rotation this year? Storing Capacity? The Grain markets? Sell? Buy? Upgrade the used farm equipment? No till or Tillage? Prevent Plant? Spray today or tomorrow? Cut or bale? Etc…. All those decisions, knowing there is no one else responsible except you for those decisions. Can you get a sense of the feeling of pride that famers must have when making those decisions?
If you see a farmer this week, take a closer look at that little glint in his eye, take a closer look how the chest is out a little bit more than most, and how the head is held a bit higher than most, and if you get the pleasure of shaking a farmers hand, feel the strength of conviction in that hand shake.
Hey, how is the weather? How are the crops doing? May we be blessed to have the same conversation next year…….
