The preferred choice for farmers of Agricultural Tracks

Combine Decision Tool

The weather has been a challenge for many this year in terms of getting crops planted, and it continues to be  a frustration as those crops try to grow.  But I’ve learned that farmers are pretty optimistic people.  They have to be, or the rest of the world would be in trouble!  With this optimism, many of you might be considering upgrading your combine in preparation for harvest.  But there is so much to consider with what is probably the most expensive piece of equipment you have on your farm.  Add to that point the fact that a combine is used fewer days than much of your machinery inventory and  I can certainly believe that decisions like this might keep you up at night.  There are two options to consider – purchasing or hiring a custom crew to do the work for you, and I found a spreadsheet on farmfutures.com that’s been created as a tool to help you decide which route is the best for you.  This spreadsheet helps evaluate critical factors that go into making a large purchase decision, and when you know the cost of using a custom harvester as well as the potential cost of ownership, you can make some sound decisions based on the data.  The spreadsheet, authored by William Edwards of Iowa State University,  should work with Excel 2000, 2002, 2010 or Excel XP.  It appears to be very user-friendly, and  I encourage you to give it a try by going to their website and doing a simple download of the file.  Let us know if this has helped you make a combine purchase decision this year!
