“Useful, With a Pleasant Degree of Humor”

This is the mantra that the Farmer’s Almanac has held on to since 1792.  Even though its focus is on farmers, this magazine has provided a wealth of information for people who hold many different jobs in our society…tide tables, sunrise and planting charts, recipes and weather forecasts to name a few.  The Almanac is North America’s oldest continuously published periodical, and comes out every September.  It’s operation is based in Dublin, New Hampshire and the words of it’s founder, Robert B. Thomas “Our main endeavor is to be useful, but with a pleasant degree of humor” still guide their efforts today.

As I read about the history of this publication, I ran across a very interesting 2-part documentary that I wanted to share with you.  Even though these folks have expanded their line of products to include things like calendars, cookbooks, music CD’s and garden guides, and it’s processes and technology have become more advanced, it remains unchanged when it comes to supplying you the reader with fun and useful information.  How many of you rely on the Farmer’s Almanac for something you do in your everyday living?  Let us know in the comment section below.
