Farmers, Ranchers – Where’s Your Long Weekend?

Posted on: September 7th, 2010 by titanoutlet No Comments

We just wrapped up Labor Day weekend – did you take some time off?   Isn’t that a funny question for farmers?  Or Dairy operations?  Or Cattle Feed Lot Operations?  Do the soybeans, the wheat, the corn, the beets, the cows, the bulls, the steers, the heifers know it is a holiday?   Maybe we should take some of that stimulus money the Federal Government seems to have an endless supply of and have a study done on the above question so we can communicate with all the above  to let them know it is a holiday and it is a day of rest.  (Yeah Right!)

From what I have learned over the years about the Farmers, the Cattle People, and most self-employed Ag & Cattle people, is that if they are not working, they are not happy.  In one of my earlier articles, I mentioned the “glean” in the eye of most farmers when they see their when they see the kernels, the beans, or the wheat go into their combine hopper.  Or when that bull or cow / calf pair brings top dollar.  Farming, Dairy, and Cattle Feed Lot operations are 24 hours, 7 days a week careers and people that chose this way of life are happiest when work is being done!

So let us be thank ful for these little Holidays they put on a calendar.  For us “office” type people enjoying the Labor Day weekend off, let us be thankful for the opportunity on Tuesday to strut into work and brag about all our exploits we did on our weekend off.   Take a moment though to realize how much more satisfying it would be if we had the luxury of not having the “weekend off”.
