The preferred choice for farmers of Agricultural Tracks

I recently received the NFU E-Newsletter and wanted to share what the National Farmers Union says about our nation’s Farm Bill:

The Farm Bill is the most important and comprehensive piece of food and farm legislation in the United States.  It’s critical not just for family farmers and ranchers, but also for consumers, rural communities, and the environment too.

A budget proposal for fiscal year 2019 was recently presented, and if it passed in its current form (which is not expected) it would have some serious consequences for family farmers, communities outside of large cities, and American consumers.  Here are just 4 areas that would be affected:

  • The average premium subsidy for crop insurance would decrease from 62% to 48%.
  • Crop insurance underwriting gains would be capped at 12%.
  • The Livestock Forage Program would be eliminated
  • Farm Service Agency would lose $300 million for staff salary, leading to a 19% employment cut.

NFU’s President, Roger Johnson was more than disappointed to hear about these suggested measures, and says the policy fails to step up for family farmers and ranchers who are expected to see yet another year of diminishing farm income.  Take a look at video below for an overview of the Farm Bill:

In an effort to raise awareness regarding the Farm Bill and to generate support for its passage in 2018, the NFU launched  They have also started a petition so members of Congress are reminded of the importance of passing an effective bill this year.  This is because the success of the Farm Bill relies on two things:  Financial support and timing.  If a bill fails to pass before September 2018, many programs would expire leaving family farmers and hungry people without support.  The same can happen also, if a bill is passed without sufficient funding.

The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition has also established an Agenda for the 2018 Farm Bill which focuses on education and action.

The Farm Bill should matter to all of us.  It influences every aspect of our food system and impacts all of our lives every day.  Stay informed and make sure your voice is heard.
