I continue to be amazed at the workings of the ag and construction industry. Why does someone buy their used farm or construction equipment from auction? Why does someone buy a used tractor, a used skid steer, a used combine, a used excavator, or used baler from a dealer? Why does someone buy new tractor, a new excavator, a new combine, or new baler from a dealer?
This past week, I went to an auction (in Grand Forks, ND) and was amazed. In more cases than you would think, people end up paying a higher cost for a used piece of agricultural or construction equipment at an auction than they would if they had purchased the used piece of equipment from the Agriculture or Construction dealership. It is interesting how the competitive nature in most people takes over when bidding on a used piece of farm equipment and the “brain” takes a little break.
Now of course there are some great buys at Auctions, you always hear about that “steal”. But I would be willing to bet, there are a lot more “darn it” deals than the “steal” deals.
I know I work at a farm and construction dealership and might have a bit have a bias opinion, but when buying from a dealer, the buying process is slowed down greatly and there is the luxury of “kicking the tires” and doing the necessary research to make a better buying decision. In addition, when buying from a reputable dealership, there is a bit of recourse if there is something wrong with the used piece of agriculture or construction equipment.
With that being said, I have to tell you, even though I was not a buyer at the auction, I can see why people buy used ag equipment or construction equipment at an auction. The bidding process, the excitement of winning, and the prospect of getting that “steal”, sure seemed like fun. But you know, when buying from a reputable dealership that stands behind the sale and is part of the ag or construction community, the buying process can be just as fun (oh yeah – not to mention the 140 point Uptime Inspection on our combines and the Money Back Guarantee on all of our equipment! You also get to see a video of machinery working before you buy…I’m just sayin’!)
This post talked about why the Titan Outlet Store can better serve your needs than an auction – here’s the Titan Outlet Store Inventory, where you can find our used tractors, combines, balers, skid steers, backhoes, and more.
