The preferred choice for farmers of Agricultural Tracks

Every farmer knows the importance of winterizing your equipment, and  AGCO has introduced an acronym – FARMS – to help you remember the basic steps:

  • F: Fill Tanks
  • A: Adequately Lubricate
  • R: Repair Damage
  • M: Maintain and Clean
  • S: Store Equipment

But have you ever thought about your ag technology?  It’s equally important to give this some attention, and Elizabeth Hawkins and John Fulton, Ohio State University Extension have these tips:

  • Bring technology indoors.  Midwest winter temps are  low enough to potentially damage the electronic components of in-cab displays and sensors such as the GPS receiver.  Even if your equipment is parked indoors, bringing these items in will protect against potential rodent damage.
  • Export and backup data from cards.  Winter is a perfect time to pull the data from your cards and/or in-cab displays.  Make sure to create a backup of the raw data before you start the process, and develop a good method of organizing your data, staying consistent from year to year.  This will make analyzing, storing and sharing much easier.
  • Make repairs.  Examine your equipment (especially wiring harnesses) for damage, ordering and replacing them to help avoid slowdowns that could happen when they fail during the season.
  • Contact dealer about firmware upgrades for technology.  Taking care of this now will be one less thing you’ll have to do in the spring before starting your field work.

Add these common-sense practices to your winter procedures and I’m sure you’ll be glad you did when you hit the fields next spring.
